<abstract xml:lang="ru">

      <trans-abstract xml:lang="en">

In F. Mauriac's work, the eternal questions of good and evil, the meaning of life, and the relationship of his characters with the outside world are solved from the perspective of a deeply religious Catholic. However, the characters are not distinguished by the orthodox straightforwardness of unconditional adherence to the tenets of faith. And this, apparently, hides the convincing power of the writer's works. His faith grows out of a deep sensual love for the surrounding nature, which was captured, spiritualized and deified by the child's mind. Living in each work this evolution from innocent idolatry, either to the giant oak tree in the Saint–Symphorien mansion, where the writer spent his childhood years, or to the invisible spirit of the poor donkey Grisette, to whom impressionable children sang songs and brought flowers, to the firm faith of a Christian, F. Mauriac does not renounce his "paganism", but he breathes it into the thoughts, words, and destinies of his characters. This "pagan" prototype complex in the mind of F. Mauriac, a Catholic, is reflected and refracted in the human destinies of his characters in an endless series of mirrors. At the same time, the antithesis paganism – Christianity does not reflect at all the conflict between pagan and Christian ideas in the author's mind. A careful reading of Mauriac's autobiographical essays leads to the conclusion that for him this antithesis was just a metaphor stating the struggle of spiritual and sensual principles in the soul of a sinful Catholic. Receiving new life in the works of fiction, this dissonance contributed to the creation of a special type of tragic in the novel, as well as the construction of an ideal, in the author's opinion, model of human destiny. The article shows the mechanism of transformation of real feelings and impressions associated with contradictory religious views into aesthetic facts of the fate of literary characters. Memoirs, autobiographical essays, diaries of the writer, which allow to penetrate into his creative laboratory, are considered an intermediate stage of literary transformation of factors of real mental life into elements of the inner world of the characters of novels.
